Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge to read and interpret maps, plans and photos to locate position and navigate safe and efficient routes to urban and regional and remote destinations. This unit applies to environmental technicians working in all industry sectors as well as a wide range of other technicians, paraprofessionals, operators and drivers.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

  • Access relevant street directories and road maps

Element: Trace the pre-determined or most efficient route on map and estimate distance and duration of journey
       
Element: Identify significant intersections and landmarks along route to assist with navigation
       
Element: Identify alternate routes in case of emergencies or significant traffic delays
       
Element: Follow selected route correctly
       
Element: Plan routes in regional and remote areas
  • Locate and read relevant legislative and regulatory, workplace requirements and background information for site or project
       
Element: Select suitable maps, aerial photos, guides and charts and check their currency and accuracy
       
Element: Select navigational equipment, check that it is fit for purpose and service or replace
       
Element: Read and interpret map symbols and navigation data to identify departure and destination points, potential hazards and select an appropriate traverse route
       
Element: Estimate distance and duration of journey using map scale and available information about the terrain and vehicle

  • Correctly orientate map with surroundings
       
Element: Identify field position and destination on map using landforms, landmarks and navigation equipment
       
Element: Correctly use navigation aids, equipment and maps to follow planned route and schedule
       
Element: Use alternate routes to avoid hazards, safely bypass obstacles or improve efficiency of route
       
Element: Maintain communication in accordance with workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks
